Surviving on

Ramen Noodles & Big dreams

We started a tech venture in a three-bedroom apartment. The living room was our office, bedroom, and sometimes even the kitchen with the hum of brainstorming sessions, as ideas flowed freely among the founding members. Our team of caffeine-fueled developers was driven by dreams, determination, and ramen noodles. All united by one common goal-making a name in the competitive tech landscape. Bank funding continued to be a concern. Instead, we dipped into the founder’s dad’s savings to kickstart the business —because nothing says “we believe in our dream” like spending someone else’s retirement fund!

Flirting with Bankruptcy

Without bank funding for the first five years, the team relied on personal savings and a relentless belief in their vision. One day, a potential investor looked at our books and said, “You guys are three days away from Bankruptcy”. But did we pack up and quit? Absolutely not. We laughed, we cried, and we kept going. Failure wasn’t just an option; it was practically a team member.

Innovation wasn’t a choice; it was a necessity. We had to constantly find creative solutions to stand out and survive, which ultimately made us stronger and more resilient.

And a little luck sparked our Global Adventure

A little ad in the Times of India caught the eye of a talented individual who would soon play a major role in Compunnel’s growth. This hire was a game-changer, marking the start of our expansion beyond the U.S. Flash forward to 1995-96, and our team took a bold leap by launching a training program focused on PowerBuilder and SQL Server DBA. We saw the tech world evolving at lightning speed and knew there was a growing need for pros who could keep up with the new trends. It was all about staying ahead of the curve and equipping folks with the skills to navigate the tech frontier. We knew we were on the right path, and that is exactly when the finances couldn’t stop flirting with us.

Hustling for

350+ days annually for the First 5 years

We, the founders, hustled hard, putting in about 350 days a year, often giving up weekends and vacations to keep the dream alive. United by a shared goal and purpose, we faced financial challenges head-on, always stressing over receivables to make sure payroll was covered. Despite the stress, we never delayed salaries—because one can’t pay bills with dreams. We rolled every dollar back into the business. The workspace was humble, but the ambitions were grand. This story includes hiring a long-haired programmer who rode a motorcycle and didn’t know much about IT but had the passion and drive that matched theirs. Today, that programmer manages a 15,000-person IT team at a client company, proving that with the right mindset, anything is possible.

Funding ecosystem? What’s that? Our community was our lifeline. Our secret sauce – friends, family, and a few unsuspecting neighbors referred people to us; voila, we had a team.
